Lowdown [1976]

I remember when I first heard this song on the radio way back in high school (early 90's) while I worked at my summer job at the car wash (!) At first listen I thought it was a black singer until I saw the album cover with this white dude sitting on a park bench. (Same deal when I first heard Bobby Caldwell sitting on a park bench on his album cover -- see December 15, 2010 post).

Anyway, here Boz Scaggs shows off his blue-eyed soulness with the killer "Lowdown" back in '76, when his mega-successful 'Silk Degrees' LP dropped on the Columbia label. The whole album has some good moments with "What Can I Say", "Love Me Tomorrow" and "It's Over", but it's "Lowdown" that does it for me. And what a way to start the b-side!

Quality tune by Arkansas soul girls Jeanne & The Darlings, released sometime in the late '60s on the Stax label. Atlantic released a 9 CD compilation back in '91 with all them great Stax tracks that you can get your hands on ("Atlantic owns copyright of all nationally distributed Stax singles recorded between 59-68" - Source: The Web).

Great horns, killer drums, driving keys and a heavy dose of them vocals = one tasty tune.

1991 Cypress Hill. Their massive debut self-titled album on Ruffhouse was a huge contribution to the emerging 90s hip hop movement in a year that saw other dope releases like ATCQ's 'Low End Theory', Geto Boys' 'We Can't Be Stopped', Main Source's 'Breaking Atoms', Pete Rock & CL Smooth's 'All Souled Out', Organized Konfusion S/T, Del, UMCs, LoNS, Black Sheep, De La, just to name a few (I could go on).

Here, though, we have DJ Muggs' raw crackling instrumental of the epic track found on this dope 12", with "How I Could Just Kill A Man" on the flip. (The JB's, Kool and the Gang, Rufus, Isley Bros. are all over this.)

Nigerian funk/soul singer Oby Onyioha's 1981 jam from her 'I Want to Feel Your Love' LP [Time] released in the post dictatorship years that spawned other artists in the country to shine through like Dizzy K. Falola, Orlando Julius to name a few.

The country's best known for the amazing work by the great Fela Kuti who single-handedly changed the global funk movement allowing artists like Oby to demonstrate her interpretation of boogie, disco, and African funk to the world.

Just listen to that beat!

She also released another LP 'Break It' [Sunny Alede records] around the same time with a more American-style party vibe with the title track serving up some early electro (also has the instrumental).

The first volume of a handful of stellar reworks/edits by Deadly Sins on the Giant Cuts label, released back in 2010 (feels so long ago, now).

Deadly Sins know how to work back some old classics that are in relative obscurity for far too many years, like this absolute jam by Bill Withers "You Got The Stuff" disco 12" found on their Vol. 1 bside. This is a crazy-good beat nicely arranged by the Deadly Sins crew without it being too "overworked", where today's edits are sometimes a dime a dozen (and not all of them are worthy).

Go on and get your hands on this and other Giant Cuts 12s, either on vinyl or digi, pronto.

Another Digable post with previously unreleased tracks that show up on Blue Note's 2005 release of the Planets' 'Beyond the Spectrum: The Creamy Spy Chronicles' featuring other jazz-hop gems never heard before, like "Three Slim's Dynamite" (also posted below).

The rest of the tracks on this release are picked from their first two albums (both essential records of the 90s that you should own!) that round out the list even if you already own "Jettin'" and "Nickel Bags", but with a worthy "Where I'm From" remix that's a breezier version than the original. Blue Note does a superb job on remastering these classics on both the CD and 2xLP releases, that are worth copping, capturing the true essence of the Planets' timeless sound.

Still sounds fresh today after all these years.

Deep house producer Danilo Plessow dropped this incredible dance floor anthem back in 2009, continuing on the successful 'Raw Cuts' [MCDE] series that's built to last.

Great build-up filled with lovely keys, a touchy guitar riff and smooth vocals over what seems to be a party atmosphere in the background. Now that's the joint!

If you have good speakers hooked up to your computer, then turn up the volume on this one and hear it again for the first time.

And, in keeping with the remix vibe, here's probably the most popular track I played in 2010 that shook them dance floors down to the ground. (Remixed by Iceland's Terrordisco.)

Paul Simon banged out this hit (original track) when 'One-Trick Pony' [Warner, 1980] was released in a saturated disco era that was commanding the airwaves at that time. Way to get in there, Paul.

This edit has the same groove from the original (I know, it's an edit) but with harder pounding drums/percussion that's solid from the start all the way to the end of the track, which makes it more dance floor friendly. This is a track where the bass, guitar (at the 1:21 mark) and drums work together in an insistent groove.

Stumbled on this smooth rework of Diana Ross' "I Wouldn't Change The Man He Is" from Italian beat junkie Amon, although I can't seem to find much info on the artist - (this track seems to be out of Amon's 2009 release of 'Red, Blue, Led, Black')

Still, this joint is on the money delivering that lush beat under Ross' vocals that's pretty great from a modern soul perspective. Blinky dropped this back in '68 before Diana released her version in 1970 on her first solo album 'Diana Ross' [Motown] after leaving The Supremes.

And gotta give thanks to the great Ashford & Simpson for penning this classic.

Haven't been able to find much about Frank Pleyer other than that he was a German composer, arranger and musician that put out two albums in the 70s, and that one of his tracks was on BBE's 2009 (another amazing) release 'Strange Breaks & Mr Thing 2 – More Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living' ("Sally" can also found on the ever-resourceful comp. 'Dusty Fingers Vol. 12').

Pleyer sets things right with lazy horns, slo-driving bass, a crisp hi-hat, and just listen to that silky guitar riff. Pure quality.

This may not be the Mouse's top ranking track, but it's perfect to chill out to over the holidays, maybe over dinner before you bring out that expensive whiskey. Released on Greensleves (one of the UK's most important reggae labels) back in '81 with Lee Van Cleef's "Gone Water Gone" on the flip - another mighty jam.

Super talented NY producer Nicolas Jaar's 2010 EP 'Marks & Angles' [Circus Company - debut release] is a refreshing look into the current dance scene even if it's not your typical high bpm club anthem record. "Angles" is layered with them strings, staggered synth, and catches on a smooth groove around the 2:51 mark perfect to start, or end, a set. It just sounds too good.

Anyway, the Chilean-born producer continues to delve into his anti-club musical imprint with some choice cuts these past couple of years, like "A Time For Us" (below) and "Don't Believe The Hype", while keeping the undanceable experimental ish in check.

If you haven't done so already, cop this EP and 12" and enjoy.

A brilliant version of "Canto De Ossanha" by the amazing jazz harpist Dorothy Ashby. Her trademark electric jazz harp sound is by far one of the grooviest, funkiest ever as it weaves all over this great album aptly named 'Dorothy's Harp' [1969, Cadet Records] with a tight rhythm accompaniment. I bet you didn't think that a harp can sound THIS dope!

While you're out picking up this album be sure to cop her 1968 landmark LP 'Afro Harping' and the 1970 gem 'The Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby', both on Cadet.

And I'm sure all you Mutty Ranks fans will recognize the sample 11 seconds into this track.

Required listening right here: James Brown's 1972 double-LP release (his first one at the time) 'Get On the Good Foot' [Polydor] really makes the album worth tracking down because of the title track and this open-ended groove "My Part/Make It Funky (Parts 3 & 4)". Great work by the rhythm section, not to mention some smokin' horns from Fred, and the always-sharp Bobby Byrd on them backing vocals.

There are a range of cuts on this album from ballads to deep grooves that round out the album as a whole.

This nod to classics pays off well as these kids offer straight up beautiful, sophisticated beats with their mastery in jazz. Too good.

Here we have an ill beat from California's Clutchy Hopkins (who's yet to be identified -- although word is that the name is a handle for a pair of well-known DJs). For me, the 1:10 mark is when it all comes together.

Well, what do we have here? Geeked out on some old slasher flicks from back in the day, like Friday the 13th Part 3 in 3D to get in the Halloween vibe. Although, watching it now, almost 30 years later, the "3D" effects AND plot are laughable compared to what I thought back then. I think the story in Part 3 is hack compared to the storyline in the first two films. Maybe because the studio made a ton of cash on Part 2 and thought that they could get away with keeping Part 3 low-budget, but, that's another discussion.

Anyway, now that I watch this film again I can't believe I slept on this dope theme song by Hot Ice!

Here's saxophonist Marion Brown in 1974 with James Jefferson on bass, Steve McCall on Drums/Percussion, Paul Bley and Muhal Richard Abrams on the Organ, Piano, and Bill Hasson on percussion. One of Madeline Bell's finest from her 1976 release 'This Is One Girl' [Pye records]. This Latin, Brazilian influenced soul track was re-issued in 2002 [Pye] but I never got a copy until recently. Must admit, I first heard this back in '04 on one of my wife's (then girlfriend) mixed CDs she had sitting around.

Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, Madeline Bell spent her time in the church singing gospel with The Glovertones (at 16 years old) before contributing her backing vocals on Dusty Springfield's hit "In the Middle Of Nowhere". Madeline also provided backing vocals for Tom Jones, Cliff Richard, Joe Cocker, Scott Walker, Elton John and others. Then she was front and centre for the group Blue Mink recording "Melting Pot" along with singer-songwriter Roger Cook. And she's still performing today.

Really glad that I copped a copy of this here ditty, thanks to my wife. But, hey, that's what friends are for, no?

Probably one of Ike and Tina's best LPs - 1970's 'Come Together' [Liberty]. Now this here track is the last song on the album and it's by far the best of the bunch with that ill drum beat, bright guitar and soulful "piana". Of course, Tina's moans and groans and rap round this baby out nicely. Most of the other tracks on the album are great Ike originals along with some tasteful covers that bring out Tina's powerful voice, which makes it a good listen throughout.

Still, "Doin' It" is as funky as it gets. Have a listen.

Here's the B-side of the 'Love Rapper's' "Spoonin Rap", produced by disco producer Peter Brown [1979, Sound Of New York, USA].

This one's got that old-school vibe that was pioneered back in the late '70s, along with Sugarhill Gang, Lovebug Starski and other disco/funk flavoured party artists. It was around this time that Spoonie Gee was one of the founding members of pioneering hip-hop outfit The Treacherous Three with DJ Easy Lee, L.A. Sunshine and Kool Moe Dee (and later, Special K) where they dropped massive tracks like "Body Rock" and "Feel The Heartbeat" before Spoonie went solo for a bit.

(Check out the "echo/repeat" effect starting at 1:48, and throughout, that sounds like them old Pyramid mixers of the day.)

Taken from the 2010 release of 'Various Artists - Nigeria Afrobeat Special: The New Explosive Sound In 1970's Nigeria' [Soundway]. There are other successful Afrobeat artists (Hugh Masekela, drummer Tony Allen), but the one that stands out for most people (or Afrobeat novices like me) is by far Fela Kuti; the man pioneered the genre. The rest of the comp is peppered with more obscure tracks of the time rather than the "hits", so pick it up.

Opening track off of Mandrill's 1973 classic album 'Just Outside of Town' [Polydor].

This track can be found on tons of 70's funk comps, along with "Fat City Strut" (starts at 4:05), not to mention some hip-hop samples comps, making them the best known tracks out of this album. Other lesser known tracks are sprinkled with some smooth instrumentals rounding out this amazing record. If you can get your hands on this, you won't be disappointed.

No actual group existed, all the vocals were done by interchangeable session singers, similar to Rinder & Lewis' other brainchild El Coco. Later this summer I'm deejaying a wedding for a fun couple (M + C) at the Thompson Landry Gallery (in the Distillery District) in Toronto where they've asked to play some 70s soul, funk, and some acid house classics from the 80s and early 90s among others. When I met with the couple to chat about their night, M shows me 'Deep Throat Part II - OST' that was re-released in 2004 by Seattle-based Light In the Attic Records and decided to pick it up after reading the sleeve. (I think I remember watching the flick way back when I was in high school, or earlier.)

Anyway, not a bad record overall but this opening track (sung by a T.J. Stone?) is probably the best of the bunch. Check it.

Just dug up some old CDs and tapes from them boxes under the stairs and came across my old worn out Cibo Matto disc from 1999. Had to pick a track to showcase so here's "Sci-Fi Wasabi" from the album 'Stereo Type A' [Warner].

Before this release, the girls (Yuka Honda and Miho Hatori) came out with 'Viva! La Woman' in '96, also on Warner, that has a slightly more trippy and sultry pop sound than 'Type A', and that it centers around food. Both albums are definitely worth owning and this time this disc will be on rotation around here.

One of Pete Rock's finest moments came in 2001 with the release of 'PeteStrumentals' on BBE (hard to believe it's been ten years already!). Jazzy, layered samples for a completely instrumental (some vocal samples here and there) album not intended with an emcee, but where each of the tracks weave together perfectly from start to finish. This was a classic right when it dropped!

If you don't have this album, do yourself a favour and pick it up, play it through, repeat. Highly highly recommended.

It's been a while since I threw on Zeppelin's 'Physical Graffiti' [Swan Song, 1975]. Actually came across this record looking for something else on the shelf to post (Pink Floyd's "San Tropez" from 'Meddle' - I'll post soon).

This is probably my favourite Led Zeppelin album not only because the album has a blend of dope acoustic pieces, raunchy blues-rock with some early metal/hard rock riffs making it a brilliant example of heavy rock music at its best. With all the band's previous successes, it was crazy to think that bassist/keys John Paul Jones was threatening to leave the band when they were recording this double LP to be a choirmaster at an English cathedral (!). He stayed on and 'Physical Graffiti' went 16 times platinum in the U.S. alone.

[One of my early mix-tapes had "Seaside" mixed with The Cramps' "I Can't Hardly Stand It" and were both in rotation at most weddings I've deejayed during the cocktail hour or dinner sesh. Yeah, the good ol' daze.]

Here's something I've been listening to lately from East Coast soul group The Joneses, from their 1974 LP 'Keepin' Up With The Joneses' [Mercury]. At the time these guys were known for their club hit "Sugar Pie Guy Parts 1 and 2", also on this album, in the early days of disco but was considered then as soul/R&B. Even though "Hey Babe" (#18 R&B chart) and "Sugar Pie Guy" (#10 R&B, #47 pop) were getting massive club play in '74 the group didn't make another LP after 'Keepin' Up' and broke up in 1975, although the band has been resurrected several times throughout and apparently still jamming.

Long before people began posting their homemade video mashups on the Web, hip-hop musicians were perfecting the art of audio montage through sampling. Sampling — or riffing — is as old as music itself, but new technologies developed in the 1980s and 1990s made it easier to reuse existing sound recordings. Acts like Public Enemy, De La Soul and the Beastie Boys created complex rhythms, references and nuanced layers of original and appropriated sound. But by the early 1990s, sampling had collided with the law. When recording industry lawyers got involved, what was once called “borrowed melody” became “copyright infringement.”

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law and money. The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul and Digital Underground, as well as emerging artists such as audiovisual remixers Eclectic Method. It also provides first-person interviews with artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield — James Brown's drummer and the world's most sampled musician — and commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton.

Computers, mobile phones and other interactive technologies are changing our relationships with media, blurring the line between producer and consumer and radically changing what it means to be creative. As artists find more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS poses the question: Can you own a sound?

Time's flying. These past few weeks were filled with last-minute holiday parties and client meetings, along with some minor home renovations, that kept me from posting some fresh tracks so we could get down. There was a day where my wife and I headed to the local thrift store to drop off a couple of boxes of stuff we don't use/need anymore along with a box of old records that I've been meaning to let go of (mostly operas, vintage children's records and some rock and disco doubles that I've already digitized). While it felt good to let go of them boxes, it felt even better when I did a "quick" dig inside that thrift store and came out with some records for .99 cents a pop. Nothing crazy-amazing, but fresh nonetheless.

Often times I dip into my pop/rock collection and revisit some gems like this track taken out of Talking Heads' 1982 live double-album release The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads [Sire]. What I like about this album is that the first record takes place between 1977-79 and the second between 1980-81, with a then ten-piece band, so you can hear their early evolution of a simple three-piece band to the legendary 10-piece with guitarist Adrian Belew . I picked this up a few years back looking for their previous release Remain In Light to dig that track "Crosseyed and Painless" and ended up getting both due to the opening track "New Feeling" on Name of This Band. Great energy throughout the whole album and one of the best rock live recordings ever.
